How much ink is in a marker?

Simply pour a bit of alcohol into a small container or the pen cap and soak the tip of the Sharpie in the liquid. Leave the pen in the alcohol for at least 30 seconds. This should dissolve enough ink to get it flowing again. Put the two pieces of the Sharpie back together again and cap the Sharpie.

Fill your bowl with rubbing alcohol (you can also use the cap of the alcohol bottle, as you’ll see in these examples) and put the Sharpie, tip down, in the liquid. Let it sit until you see a little ink running out into the alcohol. Then, cap your marker and let it sit for 15 minutes before using it again.

Do markers have ink?
If you want to weigh them straight out of the box with caps on, a full marker with caps is a little under 16 grams or 0.55 oz. A good rule of thumb is that your marker could probably use a refill if it’s 14 grams (0.5 oz) with a cap on, or 9 grams (0.31 oz) without the cap.
