In 1984, Tracey Thurman sued the City of Torrington, Connecticut, and 24 of its police officers for their failure to arrest her violent and estranged husband, Charles “Buck” Thurman.
Thurman’s suit and ultimate victory prompted unprecedented national attention toward the issue of domestic violence. On June 10th, 1983, Thurman’s husband Buck viciously assaulted her, stabbing her 13 times in the chest, neck, shoulders and face.
Buck Thurman was released from jail in 1991. He lives in Maine and is remarried. Tracey Thurman lives in Connecticut. She is remarried. Charles Thurman, Jr’s name has been changed to Charles Motuzick. He has had run-ins with the law.

A Cry for Help: The Tracey Thurman Story is a 1989 American made-for-television drama film based on the 1985 ruling Thurman v. City of Torrington. The film stars Nancy McKeon as Tracey; Dale Midkiff as Buck; and Bruce Weitz as Tracey’s lawyer, Burton Weinstein.
Her husband, Michael, whom she married in 1989, has family in the area that has accepted her and C.J. as their own. They met at his sister’s wedding. The Torrington Police Department staffed officers at their wedding, after someone threatened harm to Tracey.

Today, the 30-year-old woman, who married again and is now Tracey Motuzick, walks with difficulty. But she has made great strides to assist the victims of domestic violence.
Thurman now lives in Easthampton, Mass., according to an affidavit Motuzick filed in Superior Court in Litchfield, and is about to complete five years of probation. In her application for a permanent restraining order, Motuzick says that Thurman made threats from prison to kill her and her son when his probation ended.
