The first game was described as mostly good, but the character development as well as the interventions in the canon were not that well received by fans and critics. As far as the current canon status of the games is concerned, The Force Unleashed is, as of Disney’s acquisition, not part of the Star Wars canon.
It’s also a direct sequel, as I said, so you SHOULD play the first one first. If you have to choose, go with the first one, and skip this one, since the story in this one is so stupid and full of crappy excuses.
Is Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 backwards compatible?
No, it is not. Unfortunately, everything in that video game, including Galen Marek, is now confined to Star Wars Legends. Thus, it is not part of the new Star Wars canon.
