Is it safe to bleach dreadlocks?
You can dye your locs for up to twice a year with no fear of damage or breakage if you do it the right way. If you are bleaching your locs, it is advisable to dye your hair only once every two years because bleaching is harsh on the hair and can lead to damage if used often.
To make a moisturizing, natural shampoo, mix 1/4 cup water with 1/4 cup liquid castile soap and 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil. Add five drops of essential oil, such as sweet orange, for fragrance. Rinse with cool water to close the hair cuticles and lock in moisture. Deep-condition your dreads at least twice a week.
If you dye your hair, you risk damaging your hair texture, stripping away vital moisture and luster, and losing entire locs completely. Even dying your roots alone can be a dangerous task.
Dyeing your hair can be difficult enough when it’s naturally dark, but when you’ve got dreads and allergic to bleach, “impossible” automatically comes to mind….
Keep the cap on for thirty minutes and don not exceed forty minutes. You should check the bleach after 20 – 30 minutes. After 40 minutes the chemicals stop depositing color anyway but the peroxide in the mix will continue to work hard and damage your hair.
How long do you leave bleach in dreads?
Don’t over bleach it because the dreads can get dry and brittle and possibly break off. Dread breakage is almost always related to over bleaching or some other chemical process. After you bleach your dreads they will feel dry and tight, use a little wax to smooth them down and replace the nutrients.
