The Sound of Music was filmed in Todd-AO by Ted McCord and produced with DeLuxe Color processing. Aerial footage was photographed with an MCS-70 camera.
13. The intermission break, well, it makes more sense. The film breaks Act I and Act II after the villa party, showing Maria leaving the Von Trapp household. In the original and current stage productions, Act I wraps up with Climb Every Mountain, which ushers Maria’s return to the Von Trapps.
The Sound of Music is, indeed, based on a true story. In fact, the movie came about after the real Maria von Trapp wrote a book about her own family, called The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which was published in 1949. Their patriarch, Georg von Trapp, did marry a governess named Maria.
The film also had a sequel, “The Trapp Family in America,” which was released in 1958. Most notably, the story of this singing family became a legend in the US, as it was turned into a Broadway musical and an extremely successful film, both called “The Sound of Music.”
