How do I know if my goldfish is hibernating?
Will goldfish die in a heated tank?
All Goldfish are temperate fish and don’t absolutely require a heater, unlike fish like Discus that come from the steamy tropics. So long as your home has a decently warm constant temperature you may not need a heater even for Fancy Goldfish.
Hibernation. When water temperatures remain below 60 degrees for more than a few days, goldfish enter into a period of dormancy. They slow down, stop eating and hover at the bottom of the pond.
If the water rises to 90 degrees or above you should stop feeding. In spring and fall when your water temperatures fall to 50-60 degrees, you should reduce feeding to once every 1-2 days and feed a low protein food such as Legacy Cold Weather Food. When the temperatures drop to below 50 degrees stop feeding the fish.
How long can goldfish hibernate?
You’ll notice that they’re not huddled into a group for warmth and energy conservation, and that their fins aren’t held as closely to their body. Similarly, their appetite will return as their metabolism speeds back up – usually around 55 to 60°F for koi and a few degrees higher for goldfish.
