Did Garrett Morgan have a wife?
From 1896 to 1898, Garrett Morgan was married to Madge Nelson. In 1908, he married his second wife Mary Hasek. They had three children, John, Garrett, and Cosmo. In his later life, Morgan developed glaucoma and was functionally blind by 1943. On July 27, 1963, he died in Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of 86.
In the Cleveland, Ohio area, the Garrett A. Morgan Cleveland School of Science and the Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant have been named in his honor. An elementary school in Chicago was also named after him. An elementary school bearing his name opened in the fall of 2016 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877, and was the seventh of 11 children. He invented the three position traffic signal.
In 1914, Garrett Morgan patented a breathing device in the form of a canvas hood—a precursor to the modern gas mask. Garrett Morgan invented the first automatic three-way traffic signal system, which he eventually sold to General Electric.
When he died in 1982, he had 26 patents in his name.

In 1914, Morgan patented a breathing device, or “safety hood,” providing its wearers with a safer breathing experience in the presence of smoke, gases and other pollutants. Morgan worked hard to market the device, especially to fire departments, often personally demonstrating its reliability in fires.
