BBC Industries purchased the rights to Yoo-hoo sometime in the 1950s and retained ownership until 1976, when it sold the brand to Iroquois Brands. Yoo-hoo was sold again in 1981 to a group of private investors, which owned the brand until 1989, when it was sold to the French conglomerate Pernod Ricard.
Choc-ola ceased production. Dan Iaria rescued the drink in 2010 after discovering its 20-year trademark had expired. Iaria and former partner Joe Wolfla recreated the concoction in the kitchen of Rock Cola Cafe on Brookville Road. Wolfla is no longer associated with the company.
How do you tell if a Yoohoo is expired?
A Yoo-Hoo is essentially chocolate water. It’s pasteurized in the bottle, so as long as it remains unopened, it doesn’t go bad.
