Can I throw away Sterno?
The cans are filled with forms of alcohol or a purplish gel (petroleum product) that is flammable but does not burn quickly. The fuel puts out a visible flame and a good amount of heat. The heat and flame go straight up with little spread.

Is it safe to cook marshmallows over Sterno?
Answer: As long as the cap on the can is intact, you can keep the sterno stored for years. Stern o does not spoil but it can evaporate from an open can since it is basically liquid alcohol.
Sterno and other gel fuels are hazardous waste, and banned from trash disposal. Disposal Options Full or partially full Sterno or gel fuel cans must be taken to the HazWaste Center at the District Transfer Station. Empty cans may be recycled as scrap metal at the District Transfer Station or placed in household trash.
